Skate House

Summer X this weekend so this only seemed fitting. Check it. This would be the ultimate if you skate. It's a prototype of a badass little shack that's going to go up in Malibu for a former world champ turned entrepreneur, Pierre Andre Senizergues.

Such a cool design and layout. It's cutting edge architecture showcasing the fluid movement and how the components are creatively utilized.

A skateable surface inside and out from the kitchen counter to some casual seating just off the dining. As always, Thursday is my guest appearance over at Fred Flare.

Surf Lodge

A little weathered and maybe a little tired but full of character. This is the Surf Lodge, located at the tip of Long Island.

White washed barnwood walls and bleached pine floors. This place is a classic. Simple design embracing the surrounding natural elements. A nice little color blast too with the high back chairs and stools. Check the weathered, tree trunk high top. Another genius design element.

And the killer idea for an outdoor shower to finish it off.

Exterior Detail

There are times when I find myself looking at the precision and craftsmanship of the exterior more than the interior. It may come across as simple but I love the natural look of this reclaimed wood siding mixed with the darker, metal accents.

And, as you can see here, it's not always about heavy detail. This is about patterns in the nailing, the layout and horizontal line of the wood along with the contrast of the texture in the roof. The detail is there. Sometimes you just need to take a look at it in a slightly different way.

Rock Fireplace

Dry stacked stones and hand chiseled. It doesn't overpower the space and blends well with the reclaimed wood. A custom design and layout with the recessed cubbies and shelves.

The Divider

A crazy modern and multifunctional divider designed for a growing family that is limited on space. The newbie on one side and big bro/big sis in a sweet little nest up top.

The space is just full of cubbies and niches. A great space to learn and explore.

Modern Barn

This is a cool, modern, refurbished barn with a little farmhouse flair. I like the versatility and creativity here with these oversized awning style openings. It's nice when you have that ability to maximize a ton of natural light, take full advantage of a breeze and at the same time be shaded from the high sun.

An added bonus on the inside. They have full light sliding barn doors that can be closed to keep any nasty weather out and while still allowing the light to shine through.

Entry Lighting

One little detail to accent an entry. Check the cluster of cord lighting. So cool. Subtle, yet full of character.

Headboard and Frame

A very cool look with this custom made frame and headboard. A warm vibe and solid, heavy feel that balances the white.

One Wood Wall

Such cool character with the use of the reclaimed wood on just the bed wall here. The vintage hanging glass and guard fixture and sweet old school tennis rackets just finish off the vibe of this rustic kids room.

Rainforest

Costa Rica. On the mountainside and in the rainforest. This place is killer. A tight transformation of an abandoned steel and concrete slab structure.

Local and man-made products from the cabinets to the counter tops. A sweet, rich blend with the warm hardwood and bright whites.

A total of 5 stories and open throughout allowing the breeze to flow freely. And yet again, another design utilizing the large roof overhangs to shade and cool.

Fireplace Mass

Here it's all about mass, structure and reinforcement. This really is just crazy. I love the creativity and the fact that they were able to incorporate boulders found on site. The hanging light fixture is interesting too. I like the size and shape and the balance it brings. It's a cool compliment to the boulders in the fireplace wall.

And check this. It's the loft on the back side of the fireplace. A reading nook with a massive chuck of chiseled stone. Cozy up.

Recycled Shutters

A kickass interior design at this refined yet rustic Sacramento restaurant. I like the mix of contemporary and traditional materials overall, but the shutters are just out of control. They gathered 500 of these salvaged antiques and filled the ceiling and lined some of the walls. A solid statement with the balance in both patterns and colors.

Outdoor Gathering Space

A little way to get creative with outdoor seating. In addition to the traditional style wood deck off the house, they've carved out and excavated a small semi-private area. It's this hollowed out space with a bed of river rock as a base and board formed concrete as the seat back. The bench seating was then tied in with the decking material. It just another unique design element complimenting the architecture of the home.

Artist's Workshop

Here's a little gem just south of Mexico City in the town of Cuernavaca. This is a rustic, open air workshop/coffee house built for artists to collaborate and display their work.

The design centered around creating spaces that would blend with the surrounding landscape, allow the climate to flow freely and at the same time maximize the views of the region.

I like the raw, natural appearance of the materials. The steel was recycled from industrial waste yards and the rock walls were fabricated from stones gathered in the area.

Salvaged Vintage Pieces

I've been in the market for a vintage drafting table and just came across this from Factory 20. A killer site full of sweet vintage pieces from furnishings to lighting to art. A very cool resource full of little design elements to accent just about any room. I can't get away from this site.
