What's Up?

Architecture can move you in a number of ways.  So how do you view it?  In this crazy ass example, it's from the ground up.  Check the creativity via various skyscrapers in Hong Kong.  It's texture.  It's movement.  It's about letting your imagination go.

Coastal Binoculars

A kickass coastal residence in Nova Scotia, Canada with a unique layout both inside and out.  The exterior of this place is just fresh.  From the water the design portrays this glorified pair of binoculars.  A setting so amazing that you'd just want to sit there and peer out at the natural surroundings.  It's a genius design element.

Inside, they've take these two cantilevered tubes and broken them down into a day and night time living quarters.  Crazy volume and a ton of natural light.  Each pod has it's own balcony as well.  One for the great room and one for the master suite.

Linking the two main element together on the back side is this third core unit.  Home to the foyer and kitchen, this provides the views down the coastline.

Hollywood Hills.  Kickass views.  Check this reno of a 1960's gem.  A killer finished product embracing the 60's architecture and introducing this edgy modern style.

Standing Tall

A view of the woods and a view of the lake with a little twist.  It's vertical living in northern Michigan.  A fresh little 1400 square foot, 3 story wood box that takes the living space to the top floor.  Killer views, open air and a ton of natural light.  I just love this idea and the creativity of the architecture that can follow with the surrounding landscape.

Carved

This is what you do with a kickass piece of property overlooking the Pacific in Big Sur, California.  You carve out the hillside and follow the contours of the topography.

A warm, earthy vibe in color gets set off with a hint of blue in the outdoor chair covers and stone top in the kitchen.  A subtle tie-in as you look out to the ocean.

I love the movement of the architecture.  The mix of straight and wavy lines in the wood and metal cladding to the random, edgy patterns of the stone work.  It all goes back to elements of the natural surroundings.

Black Victorian

The Black Victorian. I like it. A bold look. It's a skateboarding couples dream shack out in San Francisco. On the inside an eclectic feel filled with an array of furnishings. Some killer pieces ranging from vintage to modern to salvage.

It's pretty casual all over but I love how laid back the kitchen feels. Some very cool artwork and photography hung over the leather sofa nook. I also like the how the floor and ceiling seem to mirror themselves in warm honey tones.

A crazy bath designed to look like a pool. Fresh and complete with pool tiles, depth markers and copings. Paying homage to skating in those empty pools.

The red bath. It's so loud yet so simplistic. Designed around the salvaged, black laboratory sink. The first time I've seen black toilet paper too....

White Contemporary Coastal

An uber contemporary guest house that was once an old warehouse. It's very basic, straightforward and symmetrical, however the use of the barnwood on the garage doors immediately transforms the style and gives a soft coastal feel.

Living on the Edge

A modern gem oh so nicely tucked right in on the edge of a cliff and at the water's edge. A great design that not only takes on the challenges of the site but of the natural weather environment as well. Elevation changes and a tight footprint. The view from the water is just sweet.

A shot of the courtyard that separates the main living from the boathouse. Fully equipped with a wood burning pizza oven and fireplace. An exterior make-up of copper, concrete, metal and cedar cladding to battle the elements.

Check the interior. Douglas fir all over giving that nautical feel for sure along with concrete floors and oversized windows. They even have some subtle copper accents in the kitchen hardware to tie the interior and exterior finishes.

A badass rooftop entry. A two story glass enclosed elevator shaft to get you to the residence. I love the stark contrast they've created between the two points of entry off land and water. So good.

Hillside Stone Cubes

Old world stone craftsmanship and style showcased in this contemporary home built into the hillside in Ticino, Switzerland. An architectural gem built to look like it's hundreds of years old.

Two cubes emerge from the rugged terrain connect internally via cavities. One cube for the garage and swimming pool and the other for the living and sleeping quarters.

The main courtyard as you walk up from the garage to the main living quarters. Open, airy and bright with natural light reflecting off the lighter tones of colored stone.

Again maximizing the use of natural light here in the garage. The door is a wooden grid and above is a narrow, metal grid system adjacent to the pool deck.

Such a killer view.

The Cube

Who doesn't love a tree house? How about this? It's the Treehotel. Located in a quiet, heavily forested village in northern Sweden. Referred to as "tree-rooms" this is one of five. It's called The Mirror cube.

The entire interior clad in bleached plywood throughout. There is no lack of natural light and they've even brought nature right inside by designing around the tree trunk.

This is freakish. Is it me or does it just not look real? It looks like a hologram. Mirrored panel walls suspended approximately 20 feet off the ground by engineered cabling. I think it's genius.
