Cord Lights

Cord lights.  Very popular right now.  Cool and retro.  Done really well in this Italian bistro in Milan.  I talk a lot about working with the existing elements and here they strike again.  Original brick barrel vaulted ceilings meet kickass cord lights.  A genius fix.  Instead of running some traditional metal pipe (conduit) to get the power to the cord lights they opted to order/design the fixtures with additional cord. The cord becomes another design element and runs exposed along the ceiling following the brick and mortar patterns completing the connection.

Mexican Cantina

It was by design. The architects purposely left the ceiling unfinished, exposing the structural elements. This is rugged and borderline crazy. I'm all about character. I would just hope it stays up there.

Always conscious of budget, I like the simplistic use of the hose bib style faucet and concrete trough sink.

Regardless of your take on the ceiling I do like the "basic" materials they've paired here from the polished concrete floors to the galvanized metal chairs. Low maintenance and cost effective. A "what you see is what you get" approach to the design. All brought forth by the design team.

Union Square Loft

Barrel vaulted ceilings, exposed brick and steel columns. The perfect example of an industrial style loft. A great space to work with all of its character and volume. The place is just kickass. Also such a seamless transition from the industrial to the contemporary.

Purple Bath

Is it purple? Is it lavender? Either way, it's bold and it works. It's great when one color can transform an entire space. I like the way they took it to the ceiling as well. A great contrast of light and dark.

All Teak Shower

The all teak shower. This space is full of crazy, unique character and all about custom from the sloped ceiling line to the steps down into the space. It's not just the materials that make the space so fresh, it's also the layout and the balance. And when you don't get enough light from the window, they accented it with two small recessed lights just above the floor line. A genius little detail.

Recycled Shutters

A kickass interior design at this refined yet rustic Sacramento restaurant. I like the mix of contemporary and traditional materials overall, but the shutters are just out of control. They gathered 500 of these salvaged antiques and filled the ceiling and lined some of the walls. A solid statement with the balance in both patterns and colors.

Rolling Ceiling

A ceiling detail that takes its inspiration from the views just outside the restaurant. It's just proof that sometimes you don't have to look too far to find that artistic little detail that can really make a space so unique.

This is the artistry behind the ceiling. The rolling, furrowed fields which the restaurant overlooks.

The pattern was computer generated, framed out of steel and then covered in wood. Instant personality.

Rich Character

Warm, welcoming and just rich. An overall great vibe to this space. I like the balance of wood from the floor to the ceiling and the way they both compliment the white walls and trim details. The wood ceiling gives off just enough character without overpowering the space too much. The stone fireplace follows suit.

A cool detail with the mantel. They spanned it the width of the room and it immediately becomes multifunctional. Simplistic and rustic. Once again you have balance and character.

Cypress Ceiling

What catches your eye when you first check this photo? The ceiling or the fireplace? It was the ceiling for me, although I do like the rustic, off balance vibe of the stone firebox. It's so rare to see this type of detail and handcrafted work in either aspect of the room. So well done. The ceiling detail reminded me a little of this post. All the wood in this room is River Recovered Cypress.

Ceiling Character

A unique and creative touch on the ceiling of this bar-restaurant. It's crazy and very artistic. This is Longman & Eagle in Chicago. A cool mix of reclaimed flooring and siding. The designers wanted to take an old idea that they felt had disappeared and bring it back in a modern way.
