A sweet textured river rock wall detail here in the powder room of this NYC apartment. I like the way they meshed the cool feel of the stone with the warmth of the old growth walnut flooring.
So what if it's a little cozy and doesn't necessarily fit into that "model" kitchen layout. I love the non-traditional feel and the overall heaviness of the room. It's clean, warm and rustic all rolled together. A nice touch too with dual soapstone farmhouse sinks and dark marble tops. A serious working kitchen.
It may seem a little uncommon and rare to incorporate a random piece of glass into the wood in your dining room floor, unless you want to show off your wine.
Check this. It's a small viewing area into the wine cellar in the lower level. A sweet little idea or teaser I guess. A creative design element and conversation piece.
Here's a little option to consider if you're looking to get creative with a little modern flair in one of your baths. It's a vanity fabricated out of concrete and redwood. A nice contrast in the natural color of the two materials. I also like the custom design and mass of the redwood base. A great balance to the vanity.
A great little bath alcove but I say the wood herringbone pattern makes the space. I'm a big fan of wood, and yes, even in a bath area. You just don't see the herringbone pattern everyday and to me it just sets the tone here. Also, the little detail of the tub top being white and the tub base painted black mimics the black walls and the white ceiling. So well done. A killer little detail.
I'm totally into painted floors. They sound impractical, but if done the right way, you can get a really cool look that looks even cooler as it wears. These oak floors were once stained very dark. They sanded them down, painted them white and then put down a polyurethane similar to the finish they put on professional basketball courts to make them really durable.
In the right space, these floors could make a crazy statement. I really like the white that this family did in their beach house. I could also see a these done in a cooler grey tone with the white trim. The painted brick detail behind this dining set is pretty kick ass too. Looks like it could have been an old fireplace.
I love wood floors. There are a ton of options for hardwood out there on the market. You can even find some great stuff in salvage warehouses. We have three different species in our house and this one is by far my favorite. It's 2-1/4" White Oak No. 2 Common. It's not the lowest grade but just one step above. They wouldn't sell me the lowest grade because they thought I would come back complaining that it was so awful I couldn't use it.
I told my installer to basically just throw it down. I didn't want him to fit it super tight nor did I want him to fill any holes or knots. Call me crazy but it worked, we saved a ton of money and got a rustic look. The wood was very inexpensive and beat up (basically because no one else wanted it) and I didn't want him to make it look polished. He did a great job and we love it.
It's a modern take on a claw foot tub and it works so well with the dark floors. I'm not opposed to hardwood in the bathroom. I think the floors really complete the space. Really - how often do you find the floors in your bathroom soaking wet? Be a little different. Go with hardwood. They even incorporated radiant heat underneath the floor. So nice. Nothing like warm floors no matter where they are.
