Kitchen Basic

A classic NYC loft space that presents a ton of possibilities for this kitchen.  I like the minimalistic approach in layout and cabinetry (or lack of).  It's not flashy at all but it works.  The vintage green farm sink sets it all off.  Basic yet still flows with texture.

A stacked brick pattern that runs the floor and continues right up wall.  That's fresh.  A killer space that features both flow and contrast.

Working Pantry

A full open style kitchen with a killer little working pantry.  It's basically an extension of the kitchen.  A creative way to maximize your space when working with a smaller or unique layout.  Renovation is always tricky that way.  You have to keep that open mind set and look for ways to stretch or borrow space.

Crisp, White and Narrow

 

Here's a little highlight from an NYC townhouse the measures just 16 feet in width.  Check this kitchen/nook space.  It's cozy but you really can't go wrong with the all white look.  Keep that space as bright as possible and you'll forget about the narrow, galley style.

Killer little added elements to highlight the space include the fresh yellow glass tiles of the backsplash as well as the factory style steel window off the sitting area.

It's subtle but I like the way they carried the horizontal lines throughout the space from the layout of the cabinetry to the cladding of the wood walls.

The floor to ceiling windows are flat out perfect once again helping open that space.  Bring on as much of that natural light as possible.

Save Some Space

A tight kitchen?  Limited counter space?  Check this fresh little design element.  Sliding cabinet doors.  Saving you space and creating interest.  Ties in well with the overall look and feel of this kitchen.  Also like the wall mounted working light between the cabinet and hood.  A simple fix providing plenty of range when working in a tight space.

Kitchen Cave

It's all about the existing elements in this kitchen cave.  There are always crazy challenges in building and design and in this example it's all about the stone work.  Classic, rustic, detailed and badass.  Old European craftsmanship you rarely come across.  This is where you embrace the conditions and get after it.

You can't hang cabinets so strategically run some base units along with an island and incorporate some freestanding pieces.  The overall lighting is weak so hide any new electrical behind base units and "wash" the walls with some up lighting.  Keep the color tones neutral and let the stone speak for itself.

Glass Pantry Door

The full light or clear glass pantry door.   Whatever you call it just be careful how you use it.  Nice example here.  It's a little bit of a cozy kitchen to begin with and the glass in the door really helps open the space a little more.  It also completes the look and style.  This is working style kitchen where items are intended to be exposed.

Again working with space constraints, this island/bench compliments the overall vibe and is fully functional.

Kitchen Scale

A cozier kitchen that's done just right.  It's a small space to begin with and I like how they don't try to jamb a huge island in there and overpower the vibe.  The rolling island, love it or hate it, works perfect here.  Roll it close to the sink, lock the wheels and it's a great place for additional prep.  The little hidden gem here, however, is the scale over the sink.  A vintage design element they're using to hold dish towels.

Greek Kitchen

Once again another killer example of modern meeting rustic.  This kitchen is part of a badass renovation of a historic home on the island of Hydra in Greece.  Timeless original craftsmanship throughout really sets the tone here from the exposed rugged stone walls to the warmth of the wood ceiling.  On the modern side you have the sleek, smooth look of the custom molded base cabinetry and cubbies.  The highlight that I feel really transforms and marks the contrast in styles is the glass floor.  A genius little idea that looks down into the food storage space.

Kitchen Bricks

A smaller European kitchen showcasing brick details.  Look just about anywhere and you'll find some kickass brick patterns and styles across many kitchen backslashes.  In this application, however, the brick becomes the focal point of the kitchen.  It may be subtle but it's all about the detail from the stacked pattern wrapping the island to the jack on jack pattern cladding the backsplash and wall surface.  A very cool example of taking the material and design a little further without going over the top.

Kitchen Styles

A modern touch mixed in with the rustic feel in this kitchen. This is from a renovated barn in England. The concept was to keep a few original characteristics while introducing some contemporary flair. Little details like the veneer of the cabinetry. The smooth, glossy finish and each unit boasting a different species of inlayed wood. The base cabinets going concave while the uppers roll the opposite and are convex.

Carved Out

The carved or plowed out look. Genius. It's subtle yet works so well just by the way they've laid the space out. Slightly raising the space off the main floor level and contrasting the color tones and textures really sets off those geometric shapes. This post also runs here. Fred Flare is my weekly guest home.

Warm Gray

A fresh little combination here in this kitchen going with more of a warmer overall feel. A prime example of the owners love of the shade of gray in this rustic stone home.

The warmer, deeper tone on the cabinets pairs so well with the honed Jet Mist granite. And to finish off the look, they've clad the backsplash in Carrara marble. It lightens the look and just slightly sets off the granite.

Brooklyn Kitchen

It seems options are always limited when you're working with a galley style (narrow) kitchen. Windows and tall ceilings are a bonus but can you get creative and maximize all at the same time? Try mixing up the style. A little modern. A little rustic. Blend the two. And a great use of the space with the hardwood shelves on the metal brackets. A nice subtle tie-in with the island.

A great solution if you don't want to sacrifice cabinets space yet still feel the need to maximize on windows. A backless cabinet with a frosted glass door. Keep it light. Keep it open.

The Sliding Top

It's all about style. How about this for your kitchen island? It's a sliding top. A gentle nudge and the piece is transformed from a sleek, modern piece of furniture to your everyday functional kitchen.

Once it's open you'll find a retractable faucet and touch screen cooktop.

Mix It Up

A mix of textures. The rough, chiseled face of the stone wall against the smooth, polished white tops. A mix of style. Clean, sharp lines give a modern vibe while warm, reclaimed wood and a vintage stove show the rustic side.

Kitchen Lines

There's not a ton of room in this kitchen but I love the overall feel with all the little details. The walls and ceiling each present opportunity to show creativity. Anytime you can carry the line of the roof you're immediately opening the space. They tied the bead board pattern of the cabinets nicely with a larger, wider look on the ceiling. The outside wall becomes and immediate design element as it also follows the line exterior design. The soft, gray tile wall showcases that barn style architecture bringing another pattern into the design as well as slightly contrasting the colors.

Blue Top Blue Ceiling

This little kitchenette is just perfect for a suite or guest house. It's clean, crisp and has all the essentials. It's on point and it works, however, I like that they took it a step further and went with a sandblasted glass top in turquoise blue. It compliments the ceiling and takes the space to the next level. A small space a huge impact.
