The Long Library

A ton of books and limited space?  No problem here.  This long hall/corridor was quickly converted into a library with a few rows of shelving and a bench.  It ties in well with the badass, 100 year old mosaic flooring too.  Also a genius little design idea with the desk lamps on the ceiling.  A creative touch to providing directional lighting in the space.  This post also ran here.

Working Pantry

A full open style kitchen with a killer little working pantry.  It's basically an extension of the kitchen.  A creative way to maximize your space when working with a smaller or unique layout.  Renovation is always tricky that way.  You have to keep that open mind set and look for ways to stretch or borrow space.

On the Outside

Is it the detail, the color or the design that catches your eye?  They've kicked some ass embracing all the elements but I'm all about the crisp, warm pattern in the teak cladding.  To go a step further it's also the idea of taking a modest size structure and creatively making a statement.  Bold, white lines showcasing geometry give that subtle modern vibe while a natural stone chimney and slate roof highlight a classic feel.

Welcome!

Check this massive, creative statement.  How fresh is this?  I love a good entry feature and the designers at Matharoo Associates did not disappoint here.  They're calling it the Curtain Door as it mimics that flow upon entry.

40 sections of Burma teak delicately carved and stacked between the concrete walls.  A bad ass composition showcasing movement, textures and patterns.

Handcrafted Art

A few super cool pieces from a badass craftsman named Sean Woolsey.  Self-taught and dedicated to putting out one of a kind pieces that stand the test of time.  Solid design and quality from woodworking to lighting to paintings.  A clear passion for what he's doing.

A little detail that can go a long way.  A basic, round reclaimed wood base with a few Reproduction Edison-Style light bulbs.  Instant character.

Exterior Metals

 A couple fresh, exterior details from this Texas style Ranch compound that I'd like to work into some projects.  In the above shot I love the use of the chain link as the downspout.  A sweet, rustic design element that compliments the industrial vibe.

And of course the outdoor shower.  Simplistic with the corrugated metal and galvanized piping.  The added touch of the saloon-style door just completes the look.

Wide Open Beach House

Just in time for the holiday.  This little gem off the northeastern coast of New Zealand is fresh.  All one residence designed as a series of pods (or pavilions) and connected by this massive communal deck.

Love the look and feel of the metal roof with the glorified shingle pattern.

Killer views from every angle in this place.  The design welcomes the outdoors inside.

A modern element to the overall design with a subtle retro vibe in some of the furnishings.

Central Fireplace

This is how you add a fireplace to the main living quarters of a penthouse.  The fireplace (or fire pit) immediately becomes an art piece or design element that anchors this very well balanced layout.

As you can see, to make the layout work, they had to design the flu line around the central structural roof member.  It's a very cool look and unique way to exhaust the flames.

Raised Floor

In order to make the plumbing in the bath of this old warehouse loft work they needed to raise the floor. So instead of having an inconvenient step up into the bath they extended the raised floor area out into the room and created a sitting area/reading nook. They've also accented the change in elevation with the contrasting floor colors. I love the creativity here. A common remodeling challenge that turns into a genius little design.

Abandoned Stable

An old abandoned stable in need of a little love. This killer stone structure kept it's rugged character outside while introducing a modern vibe on the interior. Very cool. Reshaped to accommodate a more modern lifestyle, the main living has been completely opened up while the old haylofts were turned into bedrooms.

A shot of that wide open modern look inside with the plastered walls and raw steel stair.

A mix of the elements and styles once again from the hand chiseled stone sinks in the baths to the all white smooth, glossy feel in the kitchen.

The Cube

Who doesn't love a tree house? How about this? It's the Treehotel. Located in a quiet, heavily forested village in northern Sweden. Referred to as "tree-rooms" this is one of five. It's called The Mirror cube.

The entire interior clad in bleached plywood throughout. There is no lack of natural light and they've even brought nature right inside by designing around the tree trunk.

This is freakish. Is it me or does it just not look real? It looks like a hologram. Mirrored panel walls suspended approximately 20 feet off the ground by engineered cabling. I think it's genius.

Wood Tub

How fresh? Check this. The wood tub. Hand carved from a fallen Calden tree. A staple at Hotel de Lujo Mio Buenos Aires.

Minimal, Artistic Stair and Rail

The creative, minimalistic approach with your stair system. I've seen the contemporary floating tread style before but I can't say I've ever come across the carved out, recessed hand rail. The whole ensemble blends so well with the design yet it also boasts this strong artistic quality. And check the rustic, old work bench they're using as the dining table. A sweet accent piece among the heavy modern vibe.

Pirate Room

Is this a kids bedroom or a movie set? Talk about crazy. If you have a love of pirates then this is for you. So unique and so well done. This is craft and creativity all rolled into one. Hand hewn beams, faux finishes and a rope bridge.

They've even incorporated the underwater feel with the painted murals on the walls.
